There are days when being a mom sucks. Period.

In retrospect, I was a victim of the Parenting Propaganda Conspiracy. Johnson’s, La Leche, Baby Gap and, yes, even T. Berry Brazelton, M.D.

Oh sure. They were there then. Wooing my biological clock with visions of freshly powdered bottoms, magical bonding, cutely coordinated outfits and the calm, reassuring voice of What Every Baby Knows on Lifetime, television for women. Seducing my psyche with Infants & Mothers; Toddlers & Parents and the killer On Becoming a Family: The Growth of Attachment.

But where are they now?

The last freshly powdered bottom in this house involved Dr. Sholl’s and the sole of a foot. The only magical bonding that occurs is the occasional encounter between Jack Daniels and me. Any cutely coordinated outfits are not allowed to be seen in public. There was some growth of attachment here the other day. But that happened in the vegetable crisper of the fridge.

Having abandoned hope of seeing Dr. Braz’ should-have-been-written sequels, I’ve taken it upon myself to preach the word.
