About
I’m a woman, wife, attorney and recovering at-home mom who recently returned to the practice of law.
After almost ten years of trial law, I left in order to work toward a healthier life balance. The most powerful part of the next two years was caring for my terminally ill father. After Dad died in the fall of 2001, I decided to be a full-time mom for a while before returning to law.
The “for a while” part lasted seven years. Having concluded that teenagers were minimally self-sufficient, I embarked upon a diversity of ventures, including writing, substitute teaching and giving unsolicited advice.
I recently opened my own practice, concentrating in estate planning, probate and a general civil practice.
I live in Rockford, Illinois, a great northern Illinois town of about 152,000. Residing there with me are one hubby of twenty-nine years, one teenage son and one teenage daughter. If pressed under oath, I will claim the teenagers. Also taking up space there are two four-leggers: Sadie the black Lab and Gabbie the mini Dachshund, boss of the world.

Sandy,
I love your Blog. It was a tonic to read your notes, as I’ve been missing them on the Cruise site. I reached my 20 lb. release mark there and now am bouncing up and down around a new “set point.” Still flabby as all get out round my bottom and legs. My baby sister and I have a fast forward back-to-the-future joke. I’m 90 years old, and wasting away, and I call her to tell her “Susie, I finally reached my goal weight!” lol
We are well and happy here. I have a new job in NYC, and we are moving to the big apple this summer so my darlin’ daughter can begin school there in the fall.
It’s Saturday morning, and I’m remembering to breathe again, and having a big ol’ cup of graham cracker flavored coffee - high test leaded.
Enjoy your weekend!
OMG Julie, it’s so good to hear from you! Congrats on the 20 lb release! Dahling, you just know you’re looking MAHvelous!
Hello From someone who shares the same name!
I live in So.Ca. Periodically googleing the last name to see what I find.. The last name has always been pretty rare to me, I look it up different places I travel and here we are, another Sandra Slaga! Go team!
Bye-bye
Sandra
I had to read your post several times for it to sink in - another Sandra Slaga??? Until the internet, I used to think the only Slagas were from the south side of Chicago. Would love to chat more with you, Sandra.
Sandy - does my name ring a bell? Periodically I’ve wondered how you were and thought I’d give you a google and its you. Your kids are teenagers. Boy that flew by….let’s see what comes back to your memory. Lireen
OMG Lireen! I sure as hell remember you! Aldo & Ken Marchetti - Olmarc Packaging - maternity leave, son Ian I believe and those great goodie boxes! How in the hell are you??? Hubbie is Jeff? Bring me up to speed, girl.
Well, it has been some time since I left a message…to my suprise there was a response! It does bring a silly grin to my face. I would love to chat and find things out about eachother. Wasn’t sure if I clarified but I do live in Southern California, originally from northern (no offense anyone, but I do believe we’re a better breed.. a bit less pretensious.). There seemed to be some Slagas too, in Florida? Doctors? But of course, as wise as we are.Well I will not wait as long as last time to check for a response. I did notice there is more than one page I can pull up for you, So I’ll look in to the other as well.

Hello, I am from Poland and I am looking for my great grandfather Maciej Slaga, who arrived to America in 1909 and probably died 29.03.1948 in Chicago, Cook Ill. I found by chance Your Blog. Maybe You know something about it? My family didn’t have any contact with Him, My grandmother said that they have only one letter from Him and Its missing so two days ago I know only his name Maciej Szlaga, place of birth and approximate year of His departure to USA. And now I found on Ellis Island - FREE Port of New York Passenger Records Search that his surname was changed from Szlaga to Slaga, he came to USA 28.12.1909 and I am sure that is He, because the rest information: place of birth, age, wife name is true. In Illinois Statewide Death Index, (1916–1950) I found that His death place and date and thats all. It was so long ago but I really want to find His tomb and maybe meet His family, but now I am in Poland and I don’t know how I can search more information. Sandy sorry for my bad english but I hope You will understand something.
Hello Agnieszka!
I was surprised and happy to read your note to me!
My father’s parents came from Kasina Wielka.
My grandfather (father’s father) was Franciszek Slaga. He came to America in the early 1900s. I think the year was 1909, but I’m not sure.
My grandfather settled in Chicago, Illinois. He settled in a Chicago neighborhood known as Hegewisch.
My grandmother’s name was Marianna Lacny from Kasina Wielke.
What is your grandfather’s date of death? Place of death?
I will help you if I can.
Maybe you and I are related to each other!
peace,
Sandy Slaga

was just googling my name and found more slaga’s but i did have relatives in illinois and was checking
Hi Jon! My dad was born and raised on the southeast side of Chicago in the Hegewisch neighborhood. Where in Illinois are your relatives?
Hi, Sandy!
I came across your site a week and a half ago as a result of . . . Oh, where to begin???
I was looking through Google images for smiley faces and came across one on this page: http://stayviolation.typepad.com/chucknewton/fun_and_humor/index.html
I read through much of what Chuck had on that page until I came to the entry where he mentioned something about being “Slaga-ed” and how this person ranks right up there with Erma Bombeck. Erma being one of my favorite authors when I was growing up (I think she and my mom were twin daughters of different mothers), I had to check it out.
Now I’ve read through most of what you’ve written. I have to say that you are one of the most gifted writers that I’ve ever read. My only problem with your writing is that I’ve been checking back since August 3 and haven’t found anything new. MORE! MORE!!! (Please?)
Thanks, Tom, for the kind words. I’ll be cranking out some more once I get my son off to college next week!
Hi Sandy and others,
I also Googled my name and came across your blog. I am from Connecticut and there are a bunch of Slagas here also. My great grandparents were from Poland and came here around 1914 I think. There were from somewhere near Cracovia. My father’s name is Thomas, but he is not the famous doctor. He is a great smart man though. I’ve always wondered if most Slagas were distantly related or not. Well anyway, I’ve enjoyed reading your blog.
Thanks.
Susan
Thanks for visiting, Susan! My dad’s parents came from the Kasina Wielka area of Poland. I, too, have often wondered if not all Slagas are distantly related. Would be fun to research someday.

Hope you had a good thanksgiving!
God bless,
Matt
Matt, how wonderful to hear from you! How’s Boylan? Please say hello to your brother for me.
Hello Sandy,
I like others came across your site as a Slaga Google Search. Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. I’m Tom Slaga from Michigan, no I’m not the Dr. Slaga that has the most hits under Tom Slaga lol. Yes, there are a bunch of us Slaga’s here in Michigan as well as other locations in the US. You seem to have more of the Slaga hits out there with comments, maybe we Slaga’s can contact the Slaga’s in CA. that own the Slaga.com name and start a Virtual Slaga reunion… If anyone is interested, you can contact me on my site at Http://www.TomsCHIPS.com
Thanks for the opportunity to chat.. Hope to hear from other Slaga’s out there… Have a Great Day..
Tom Slaga
Tom, so glad to meet you! I honest to god never realized there were so many Slagas. Growing up I thought surely no one but our family could have such a weird name.
A Virtual Slaga reunion would be very interesting.
Thanks again for stopping by.
Greetings
